Defining the difference between a web design firm and a web development firm is like asking what the difference between a marketing firm and advertising agency is. A marketing firm can handle some of the services you require, such as getting the word out about a specific offer, while an advertising agency is more full-service and focused on long-term goals. Likewise, a web design firm can create a website, while a web development firm normally handles design, graphics, programming, marketing, and more. An example of one such company would be Bump Networks, http://www.bumpnetworks.com/services/web_development /web_design/
If your company plans on hiring a firm to create or redesign a website, it is critical to know the limits, or limitlessness, of each web firm under consideration. Don't assume that web developers are creative, or that web designers are programmers. Many are, but it is always safe to ask first, instead of discovering otherwise halfway through the project. Don't forget, this is the Internet we're talking about here. A company can call itself whatever it likes, that is why some "web design firms" simply buy templates from sites like TemplateMonster.com and others create totally unique work; work that wins your company awards. Unfortunately, there is no industry standard that insists you meet certain criteria to call yourself a web design firm.
The difference between a web design firm and a web development firm is usually the level of programming, web capabilities, and expertise with the latest design software. The higher the level of graphic design expertise, the more stunning your website will be. So, when you think "web design" think "creative" and when you think "web development" think "technical." In addition, a web development firm also concentrates on your long-term strategy and goals. For the best results, find a company that is both a design and development firm and can handle everything.
Why? Getting back to the marketing/advertising comparison, why would you hire one firm to create a direct mail piece, another to print it, and yet another to track responses? It would make sense to use one firm for all services and to have one point of contact. So, look for a web design or web development firm that handles everything from graphics, design, development, optimization, and marketing campaigns. In the end, a full-service firm will save your company time and money.
