Web forums have been popular and common for some years now. You might ask, though, what the costs of having a running a web forum are, and what the benefits of a web forum are. After all, you certainly don't want to spend large sums of money if there is little purpose.
The costs of setting up a web forum can be quite variable, depending on the size, hosting company, and features. For instance, an inexpensive package may be no more than $10 US per month, though it won't have many bells and whistles. In some cases, a person can even get free hosting, though this usually comes with advertising, which is what actually pays for the space.
The monthly cost of a nice, well run web forum can be many times higher than this, again depending on what extras are desired. Space is an important consideration too. If the package is too small (in terms of space), the number of possible members will be limited.
Add to this the maintenance costs. The forum software will periodically need to be updated, for example. Though this is usually free, it takes time to do the update. Add-ons that give additional functionality are likewise inexpensive or free, but they take time to add, and the forum administrator often finds that they must spend yet more time troubleshooting when something doesn't work properly. The costs of maintenance are usually minimal, but the time involved often isn't.
So what are the benefits, and do these offset the expense and time? This is a judgment call each Webmaster must decide for themselves, however the biggest benefit is that the forums draw people together. They allow for an exchange of ideas, notions, thoughts, and information. They also form a support structure that is tremendous, but difficult to evaluate on terms of worth since it usually varies from person to person.
While they aren't as personal as emails, web forums also allow a greater amount of feedback, which helps the members to grow. Some people may not think there is much value in this. However, consider that every single time you interact with someone else, or they with you, you both come away slightly different than before the interaction took place.
Web forums also allow a busy person to ask a question, then return hours or even days later to get the answer. This makes the forum time efficient for the member. In fact, successful forums are strongly oriented toward the members, which is part of their great appeal.
For major sites like Helium.com, the web forums give information, answer questions, and allow people to form friendships along the way. It is possible that other ways could be found to do exactly the same thing, but it is unlikely that any would be quite as smooth or easy for everyone involved.
The costs of web forums can be pretty easily figured out, even though the range may be large. However the benefits, while obvious to many, are hard to put an actual value on. It is telling, though, that most people who have been part of the administration of a board, either as an administrator or as a moderator, will readily do so again if presented the opportunity. Taken one step further, most people who have used and gotten used to forums will most likely join another and may even belong to several at the same time.
The bottom line is that the costs of a web forum need not be great, but the benefits generally are for most people.
