The history and use of pistachios

The history of the pistachio is a very long one believe it or not, the pistachio dates back even before biblical times, some say the pistachio is known for growing on trees from as far back as 7,000 B.C, wow! now thats a long time! No wonder they are liked so well and used in so many ways and for so many things.

Pistachios were found growing over 7,000 b.c in the desert of all places, people told stories of how you could hear the pistachios crack in the moonlight and if you did it meant that you were going to come into good fortune, speaking of fortune one of the first places known for growing and harvesting pistachios is western Asia and also near Asia minor, The Aisians would not only harvest the pistachios but they would place some of their first crop into a nice dish and keep in a room with them to bring them good fortune, and to keep a happy spirit going in the room.

Iran is known as the second country to star growing and harvesing pistachios as early as the 1800s, following Iran is ofcourse the U.S.A, followed by turkey, Greece, Syria and Italy, In the early 1980s Australia began to plant pistachio trees but it wasn't until the 1990s that they were able to start producing a profitable crop that they could harvest, and put into productivity, due to the fact that pistachio trees can take up to six years to grow their nuts and twelve years to even reach maturity for picking.

Pistachios have a green kernal color to them and a shell that is already split, so they are easier than your traditional nut to crack open, they have an excellent flavor and they are very good for you, their rich in vitamins and nutrients and they make an excellent snack.

You can use pistachios in a variety of foods, you can put them in cookies make pistachio pudding ,ice cream, trail mix is an excellent snack to add pistachios to,you can also make pistachio butter, which is very similar to peanut butter, but alot better for you and alot lower in calories, pistachios are related to the cashew family, and come with all of the benefits that cashews have to offer mentally and physically.

There are many healthy benefits you can also get from eating pistachios, and they are as follows, vitamin b6, thiamine, riboflaven and a whole list of more vitamins and nutrients that are good for your body, Pistachios are also good for aiding in health of the heart muscles, brain ,bladder ,skin, liver and many other organs in the human body.

Pistachios have many uses but the most interesting one in my opinion is the one that dates back as far as the paleolithic period over thousands of years ago, pistachios were used in making jewlery such as necklaces, bracelets and some believe tribal nose rings, way back in the caveman days,Pistachios are also used in making lamps in the far east and they also make pistachio game boards and decorate their hemp necklaces or bridals for their camels with shells from pistachios.

There are more uses for pistachios than you could ever imagine, and I hope I have helped you on your way to learning more about the history and uses for pisatchios.
