The best movies of 2006

to remind us how good life can be.

#2 Casino Royale
This new take on the James Bond mythos is a hard-edged, entertaining flick that reignited the series out of self-parody back into riveting drama.

#1 United 93
Paul Greengrass' documentary style provides the perfect canvas to tell the story of the "flight that fought back" without giving it a Hollywood feel. Not an easy film to watch, but impossible to forget.

The Ten Worst Films of 2006
#10 Lady in the Water
Like many in this Top Ten, there may have been worse movies, but few that were so boldly bad. You expect low budget flicks to stink: this film by M. Night Shyamalan was supposed to live up to the promise of "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable" but instead gave us a jumbled mess that had viewers saying "That was it?"

#9 Big Momma's House 2
A bad sequel to a film that should never have been made to begin with. Someone gave Martin Lawrence a ton of money to be unfunny in the hopes they could sucker $20 million out of bored moviegoers before word got out that the movie stunk. It worked.

#8 Firewall
The movie that delayed a new Indiana Jones film by at least two years. Harrison Ford should know better. Hollywood has yet to learn that movies built around computers aren't any good.

#7 Borat
A funny concept, until you realize it all comes at the expense of making a lot of normal, unassuming people look like idiots. Sure, some real idiots are the butt of some jokes, but being offensive wears thin quick. Proof we are way too cynical and should try being more human.

#6 The Benchwarmers
Rob Schneider produced this geek tale starring Rob Schneider, David Spade, Jon Heder, and Jon Lovitz, five reasons not to see it. It only manages to make fun of the people it tries to make sympathetic. Don't say we didn't warn you.

#5 The Pink Panther
The movie series that killed Peter Sellers somehow spared Steve Martin. Face it: Martin hasn't been funny since Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and yet they still made a sequel.

#4 The DaVinci Code
Oh, if only historic dead people could sue for defamation of character. The overhyped book became an overhyped movie that managed to bore everyone to death.

#3 Snakes on a Plane
We all know Samuel L. Jackson will make any movie, no matter how bad, and this is as bad as it gets. Not even good enough to be a cult classic; at least they are a guilty pleasure. When your best line in the script comes from a suggestion off of the internet, you know you are in trouble.

#2 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Where did it all go wrong? This bloated sequel is confusing and boring, a complete waste of Johnny Depp's talents. Fans cried mutiny.

#1 Little Man
Films today can be crude and offensive, so long as they are funny. Little Man was all of the former and none of the latter. Not even the trailer was funny. It revels in every racial and sexual stereotype and expects you to laugh, yet you never do.
