The best movies of 2006

Cinephiles like to argue over which films are better than others, and when it comes to Top Ten lists, no one seems to agree. 2006 saw a number of great films from various genres, and here are ten of the best films from those groups to argue over. No "best of" list could be appreciated without a "worst of" list, so here are ten of the worst films of 2006 as well.

The Best Pictures of 2006
#10 Babel
A complex yet powerful film that proves that even the grandest stories can be simplified into the most personal of terms.

#9 Monster House
Hollywood seems to think that if you throw enough money, loud noises, and special effects into a film, any kid will see it. Monster House proves you can tell a funny story without being loud and obnoxious, and kids can enjoy it. The CGI kids in the film are better actors than real ones today.

#8 Rocky Balboa
You read that right: a Rocky sequel in a "Ten Best" list, and I wasn't the only one. Critics and fans were won over by Stallone's heartfelt return to the ring, which was more about fathers and sons than jabs and body blows.

#7 Little Miss Sunshine
This quirky family comedy was a surprise hit, thanks to a strong cast and some of the funniest lines said on film that year. The ending may have been over the top, but you could believe this crazy group would have done just that. Alan Arkin won a deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscar as the profane grandfather.

#6 World Trade Center
You only thought you knew about all the tales of bravery on 9/11. This true story of Port Authority cops who did, and did not, survive the attacks will haunt you long after the credits roll. Arguably Oliver Stone's best film.

#5 The Departed
The Academy seemed a little too eager to give Martin Scorsese some overdue love, and it did so with this DiCaprio crime flick, winning Best Picture. While a bit overhyped, it is still a smart, affecting tale with great performances and Scorsese's signature style.

#4 Flags of Our Fathers
Part one of Clint Eastwood's take on the Battle for Iwo Jima didn't get the attention part two did, as Letters from Iwo Jima (telling the side of the Japanese) scored a Best Picture nod. In hindsight, Flags is a more engrossing tale, following the American soldiers back home as they struggled to cope with the mental scars of battle.

#3 The Pursuit of Happyness
Will Smith should have won the Best Actor Oscar for this wonderful true tale of a struggling single dad who achieved the American dream. It is the kind of film that should be seen once a year
