Birdsong

Numerous are the trees in the forest of our love
Great Sequoias
Trunks too vast to embrace
Stalks cast shadows deep and trailing long
Yet transcending the sullen disquiet
Are airy branches
Thickly interwoven
Barely caressing each other
The wind that blows through the branches
Like the time we spend apart
Unseen-Empty
Utter a whispering yearning
Lacking melody

Then the glorious lark returns
Flits jauntily between the branches
And begins to sing
Filling the dark forest with his song
Cutting high and pure above the wind
O joyous wondrous magnificent sound
O sweet trilling, lilting, quavering birdsong
How I have longed to hear your voice cutting through the silence
Awaken me with the purl of spring
O how he unburdens his soul
My ears and heart delight in his abandon
Suddenly the forest doesn't seem so dark and lonely a place
Knowing that the lark shall return again and again
To sing its glorious Birdsong
To my soul
