One-night stands

by Luann Dawkins

Created on: September 10, 2008

As I watch you sitting at the bar, running your finger around the rim of your wine glass, my heart breaks for you. I saw you here last night with the same stricken, empty gaze in your eyes. I know you are lonely and need someone to love. You are searching for something that always seems just out of your grasp, the need to connect with another human being overwhelms your mind and clouds your judgement. I was much the same way when my last one-night stand occurred.

I had such a feeling of despair, I was divorced by twenty-five, that was not supposed to happen to my life. I had visions of growing old with my spouse and starting a family. What happened to all my dreams and plans for the bright, sunny life I was entitled to live? I tried to drown my sorrows, much like you are now, and find love where no love could exist. After several one night stands, I had become a desperate soul, sleeping with anyone who looked my way.

So, you see, I do know where you are coming from, and as I watch the events of your life unfold before me, I silently scream. Please protect yourself, find a different way to connect with men, join a singles club, or go online to a dating service. Don't be fooled by this smooth talking, Svengali, they are not concerned with your health and well being. They want only one thing and you are leading them to it with a toss of your hair and the depth of your despair. They will lead you to the destruction of all your hopes and dreams and possibly worse.

I am floating above you, unable to help, can you hear my whisper? Run, run, run as fast as you can. Get off that bar stool and find a friend, find a way to fill the void, until Mr. Right walks through the door and sweeps you off your feet. Please hear me, he is out there, just have faith and patience and you will be rewarded. You will be loved, it is in the stars for you, just bide your time and your dreams will come true.

I see a look in your eyes as that slick, silver-tongued devil chats you up about nothing of importance. That look is one I wish I had gotten in my eye, years before it was too late. You hop from your stool and pay the bartender, and laughing at the devil, you turn and walk away. I rejoice, because I know you will see the beautiful faces of your children someday. I can only mourn the loss of such a dream, as my last one night stand took my last breath, my very existence, now I am only an observer and wisher of better things for the lonely hearts left on earth.
