Star Trek was one of TV's pioneers in bringing technology to the big screen. At the time, we were amazed with their concept that a door would open without touching it or that they could speak into a gadget on their shirt and the receiver would have perfect reception.

We were in awe at the suggestion that other species could possibility exist in the universe, and even more wide eyed at the concept of living with them without war. Yet, Mr. Spock entertained us all with his prophetic words of wisdom and his allegiance to Captain Kirk. He won our hearts because he was everything that we never imagined an alien would be.

As the years passed by, the technological concepts that we once thought were impossible to employ have now actually become household names. We went from accepting this pretentious technology into living the reality of it, and all within a few short decades.

For those of us who were there at the start, this has been an amazing achievement and we want to hold on to Star Trek for showing us the light. But for those who just tuned it, Star Trek is boring.

Many feel that Star Trek should stay dead because for one, most of the actors are either aged or have passed on and this generation of movie watchers likes to see young blood, and they can't relate to the ideals of the older generation.

As well, today's world is highly technological and almost every young person is connected with the world wide web and with their ipods. Modern tech is so sophisticated that it's beyond much imagination as to how it actually works. But it works and the young people can work it.

Many contemporary TV shows promote the use of high tech, fast-paced technology in almost every aspect of life. The young people were born into this lifestyle and they don't really know what it was like, for example, to dial a telephone or write a physical letter. They are likely to never take an interest in the production of antiquated technology that's in Star Trek.

As well, Star Trek was censored and allowed only about two swear words, being damn and hell. Viewers were not exposed to anything more and didn't expect it. That was normal for then but today's language has deteriorated considerably in that cursing, filth and profanity is the norm for television and movies.

Today's viewers are expecting and requesting that this "normal" language be used because that is what they know. To them, Star Trek is not real and the actors don't speak normal so they view it as not realistic. Sadly though, this realism that they accept has never been the acceptable norm for television and the movies until recently.

And lastly, even though there were woman dressed in outfits that revealed their sexuality quite well, it's not realistic for today's viewers. During that era it would be assumed what the man and women did, where today you get to watch it. And viewers today want this and look for this in TV shows and in the movies.

So, for many viewers Star Trek should stay dead because it is outdated, old fashioned, unrealistic and doesn't contain enough violence and sex to be entertaining. However, for those of us who grew up with Captain Kirk, we will remain faithful Trekkies.
