What is Facebook?

by Jennifer E. Brown

Created on: September 10, 2008

Facebook is a social network that was founded in 2004. It has been originally meant for college students only, but in the past few years, it has opened it website to everyone. The only requirement is that you have an email address, and you can communicate on-line with family, friends, even co-workers.

Once on this site, it's easy to find your way around. After you log on, you'll be taken to Facebook's main page. A news feed is at the top, and this is where you can you catch up on what your friends on doing on the site. Group joinings, pictures, profile updates, and comments are a few things you will find here. However, there are more that you can read, and it depends on what your settings are with facebook.

The "Profile" link will take you to your profile. Your profile holds information about you, your friends, picture, and the wall your friends write on. Also, all the groups you have joined will appear here. All the boxes will appear open unless you want a cleaner, more efficient profile. There are alternative ways of doing this.

One way is clicking the arrow to the left of the title of the box. If It's pointing right, this means it's closed. Also, you can click on the title of a box and drag it to the left side of your profile. Likewise, anything on the right hand side of your profile can be moved to the larger part of your profile. At the end of my profile, I have a title box called "Show more Profile Boxes" which is minimized. This is where you can click and drag your boxes with your mouse so they don't show on your profile. It makes it a much cleaner, more efficient page for your friends and yourself.

Clicking "edit" next to profile allows you to edit your profile information. This is where you can put everything you feel comfortable people knowing about you on the Internet. Such things like work, education, picture, contact info, and relationship status can be found here. Keep in mind that people who aren't your friends on facebook can't see your profile. This is why I prefer it over Myspace. As you click through the tabs, remember to save before you go onto the next one or your information will be lost.

When you click on the Fiends link at the top, you'll be taken to a page that includes the status updates of your friends. These are messages people post when they want to send out a message to their friends. To edit your status, click on "What are you doing right now?" and you can leave one too.

Clicking on the down arrow by friends and "on-line now"
