The onset of Global Warming is fast becoming a too familiar reality, and with it comes the urgent need to conserve our dwindling fresh water supply. Saving water is no longer just an option for all of us it is a necessity. We can all help the water crisis with care and concern for our environment. One way is to take an eco-friendly shower each day.
If you live in an area that gets plenty of daily sunlight, a solar hot-water system is a cost-effective way to help to cut down on greenhouse gases. This eco-friendly system reduces our reliance on fossil fuels and saves more than 3.5 tonnes of greenhouse emissions yearly.
Bathroom shops now sell water-saver shower heads which will cut down on the amount of water you use to take a shower. You will still have the enjoyment of feeling the rush of warm water over your body, with the added bonus of saving more than 50 percent of water used. If you have teenagers in your household, a timer that rings after five minutes is an essential piece of bathroom equipment.
It is a good idea to have a plastic bucket in the shower stall. Position it under the stream of water as the shower heats up. You can then use this water to water your plants. Or better still, install a grey-water system. There are two types of systems gravity fed manual systems and package systems. The manual systems work on gravity and therefore do not need electricity or a pump. The packaged systems are self contained and can be installed inside, but they do require electricity. With a grey-water system, all the waste-water from the household can be used to water the garden very eco-friendly
Here is a step by step method to shower effectively and make the best use of the water in an eco-friendly manner
1. Wet your hair thoroughly and apply shampoo, lathering well.
2. Rinse off hair and apply conditioner, rubbing through to the ends. Leave on.
3. Apply facial scrub and leave on.
4. Using your body wash, scrub the rest of your body thoroughly and quickly.
5. Starting from your hair, rinse off well, then your face, and the rest of your body.
You have completed your shower in less than five minutes. Congratulations!
Protecting the environment for now and for future generations is our duty as responsible citizens. If we can save money in the process, that is a bonus. How much water can you save when you take a shower?
