Research can be a grueling process for any author. When writing a book or novel, you often need a lot of facts, figures and details to help develop your story. That's why it usually takes many writers months or even years to start writing their books.

One author recently wrote on a blog post that it took her 10 years to start writing her first novel! If you don't have that kind of time and want to start a bit sooner, it's important that you only do the research you need so you can start writing as soon as possible.

Writing In The Fast Lane

In the old days, before we had cell phones, email, sms, television etc authors could go just about anywhere, sit down and write free from distractions. But today, our lives are busier than ever before and finding the time to write can sometimes feel like a luxury.

That's why it's more important than ever to devote the time you do have for your writing. One of the biggest challenges many authors face though, especially when writing their first book, is doing research. Research is the foundation of your book, novel or screenplay. It allows you to develop your characters, plotlines, themes and concepts to really construct the story the way you'd like.

Today there are so many options available when researching your book, that it's often very difficult to find the exact information you're looking for in a short amount of time.

Whether you're an author or screenwriter, it doesn't really matter. Being able to quickly do fast effective research and become an expert on your topic is critical to your success as a writer.

But as we all know, becoming an expert on anything takes a lot of work. Often you're not just looking for one article or one website but searching dozens or even hundreds of them. Then you have to take all those different resources you find and fuse them together into storylines, characters, ideas and concepts that you want to write about. However without the proper tools you'll easily spend more of your time researching than writing and never get your book started.
