The bathroom can be the small sanctuary in our often hectic lives. So, it only makes sense that we relish our time spend there. For many of us, the shower in particular is cherished. From an energizing A.M. suds to a relaxing shower before bed. But you don't have to sacrifice comfort to make your shower eco-friendly.
Switching to an energy saving shower head can save up to 70% of your annual water usage. These models operate on low water flow meaning you use and waste less water. And don't worry you won't have to sacrifice water pressure either.
Choosing an eco-friendly shower curtain will also help to create your green oasis. Choose curtains made from hemp or organic cotton. And swap your plastic shower liner for a nylon version. The plastic varieties are often made from PVC that can be harmful to your health as well as the environment. The best part? You can easily machine wash them. Let's face it, we've all fell guilty to a soap scum lined plastic shower liner.
But, short of a bathroom make over, there are many simple ways to green your shower. Simply cutting your shower time by just 5 minutes will save gallons. Set a kitchen timer for five minutes shorter than your normal shower to help you cut down until you've streamlined your routine.
Try turning off the water when you aren't using it, such as while shaving or letting a deep conditioner absorb. And try to avoid letting the shower run while waiting for the water to warm up. Instead, jump in while the temperature is luke warm, not hot, and let it heat up while you are actually using the water.
If you can't bear the thought of hopping into a cool shower, use a bucket or container to catch the pre-shower water. You can re-use it for other household tasks such as watering plants or filling up pets' drinking bowls.
Pretty soon these habits will become second nature and you'll be showering eco-friendly style in no time. And saving gallons of water not to mention money on your water bill.
