We all have different opinions about what is right and wrong, good or bad. Still, the majority of us tend to agree that it's wrong to do certain things like stealing, taking the life of another human being, and cheating. Beyond avoiding these actions though, does it really make a difference whether or not you have good morals?
Although what defines good morals varies from person to person and culture to culture, we do know one thing: having good morals does seem to work in your favor. How so?
Below you'll find four reasons why it pays to have good morals.
1. It isn't difficult to tell the difference between someone with no morals and a person with high moral standards. No one wants to be close to an individual that lacks morals, that is careless about themselves and toward others. However the person with good morals tends to attract many friends. So, if you want true friends in your life, having good morals is definitely a plus.
2. In the area of work and career success, good morals are vital. Most employers are looking for individuals with high moral standards. They want someone they can trust and rely on. People are more willing to do business with someone they know has good morals. Just think about it. Who would you rather work with? Someone who is seeking to make money at any cost? Or the person who refuses to compromise his moral standards just to make a sell?
3. Good morals reap respect. No body respects a liar and a cheater. Even if such an individual does "make it big" because of their dishonest tactics it never really pays off. Their lack of morals will only take them so far. A person with good morals is looked up to by others, treated well, valued as an individual, usually gets the promotion or pay raise, and receives help and support in times of need.
4. The biggest pay off to having good morals though, isn't any validation you get from the outside. The greatest pay off is your personal approval. People who have high moral standards have more love and respect for themselves. You'll feel much better about yourself when you achieve success through honest actions as opposed to dishonest tactics. You'll be able to go to sleep at night knowing you've done your best, and lived the best that you know how. There is nothing more rewarding than that.
There are two very important things to remember about having good morals. The first is that no one can tell you what good morals are. That is for you to decide. As I mentioned at the beginning, there are certain things most of us tend to agree upon, but we are all different. Second, having good morals does not mean sacrificing your own happiness for that of others. Having love and respect for yourself is essential to good morals. If you honor yourself and live by your own high standards then you will live the best life possible and reap the greatest rewards.
