Travel destinations: Falkland Islands

The dreamy picturesque panorama of blue skies, golden sands and clear, sparkling water is probably going to bring to mind travel destinations such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas or other beauty spots in the South Atlantic, but it is unlikely that a place like the Falkland Islands would ever spring to mind. The Falkland Islands is known the world over because it was at one time the subject of a conflict between Britain and Argentina when Margaret Thatcher was in power as British Prime Minister. It is not a place most people would consider a vacation spot deep in the Atlantic miles from anywhere.

The dispute over sovereignty put the Falkland Islands on the world map as many people had never heard of the place before. It would not be on most people's list as a must see vacation spot because it is so far away and the weather is not exactly the kind you would expect for a vacation destination. The Caribbean might be a better option for people who want a relaxing vacation with all the trimmings like sun, sea and sand that feels more like a vacation. If you ever watched any of the footage from the Falklands War, it never did look like a place you would choose to visit with your family for a vacation. It was always seen as a place that was cold and unwelcoming. A place that looked desolate and isolated from civilization. Though there are a few thousand people living on the Falkland Islands, it is not the kind of place you would expect to find in a vacation brochure as a popular spot for fun.

Perhaps those people who choose to visit the Falkland Islands on vacation are those who might be interested int he history of the place, particularly as the place where a conflict had been fought between Britain and Argentina. Some would of course see it as a place for vacation if they had friends or relatives who lived on the island. The Falkland Islands can't possibly match some of the other vacation destinations around the Atlantic area. Compared to some locations, the Falkland Islands is very limited in what it can offer people seeking a fun-filled vacation. If you like activity when you are on vacation or if you have a young family to keep amused, there are much better places you could go that would satisfy them much more.

The Falkland Islands is a place that would be more suited to people who just like the brisk outdoors rather than those who like to vacation feel of sun, sea and sand with all the activities this usually brings. Hill walkers would probably love the place but it is not really a place for young children who enjoy the holiday atmosphere.

Some who have visited the Falklands wonder what all the fuss was about and why two countries should have gone to war to fight over these small islands with the loss of so many lives. The Falklands is a place of interest rather than a vacation spot for those who enjoy all the usual things families do when they go away from home. It is certainly a travel destination but not one you would choose if you want a fun-filled vacation.
