The Al Gore documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" won an Emmy and makes a convincing argument that global warming not only exists, but is a gargantuan problem that will only get worse if we don't take action. But for those viewers left pondering, "What can I do?" as the credits rolled, the only advice to be found was rather skimpy: a URL to Gore's website at the end of the movie, and a list of suggestions on the inside cover of the DVD.
Not only is global warming reversible if we act promptly, it only requires some very simple lifestyle changes. It's nice to think of everyone trading in their SUVs for a Toyota Prius or another hybrid vehicle, but unfortunately it's also unrealistic. A better option would be for everyone to choose and diligently practice two or three of the suggestions below. Such small actions could improve the quality of our environment by leaps and bounds.
* Use the same drinking glass and mug at work for water, coffee, and other beverages instead of going through an unending supply of plastic and paper cups.
* Don't brown bag your lunch anymore. Ditch the disposable paper and plastic bags for reusable food containers. Check out the stylish and funky lunch bags and containers at http://www.builtny.com and http://www.laptoplunches.com to get inspired.
* Stop using plastic bags, which cost money and energy to make and often end up in the bellies of unsuspecting aquatic animals. Reusable bags won't break and come in a wide variety of patterns and colors to fit anyone's personal style. Visit http://www.reusablebags.com to get started. Many retail store chains such as Target and Stop&Shop now sell their own branded resuable sacks.
* Recycle everything that you possibly can. Most if not all towns have recycling service. Check with your town's official website or town hall to find out the procedure for yours. Most localities will at least take paper, bottles, cans, and dismantled boxes. Recycle at work as well, setting aside papers that you would normally trash, and take them over to the recycling bin in your office once a week. When you receive a package in the mail, save the box or large envelope that it came in to reuse for future shipping.
* Keep your car's tires properly inflated. This is something that everyone should be doing anyway, at least once a month, to ensure maximum gas mileage. It helps the planet prevent 250 pounds of carbon dioxide from being emitted from your car each year, and an added benefit is that you'll save money on gas by
