You knew that I didn't love you
But you took me anyway
Accepted whatever I could give you
In whatever way.
You gave me your home
Your name
Your life
the day you made me your wife.
You asked nothing
but for me to lie
by your side
at night.
You were so grateful
for each touch
each caress.
You never asked for more
nor for any less
than to love me.
Even though I did not love you
it grew.
Days passed and
nights disappeared into the darkness
that surrounded us
and it grew.
Perhaps it was how hard you worked
Perhaps it was how little you asked
Perhaps it was how lonely you had been
before I came
or how lonely you would still have been
if I hadn't.
You knew
that I didn't love you
but you took me anyway
and it grew
you knew!
