DEATH TAKE MY HAND

Paper tigers and fires from hell,
Nightmarish visions, inside this cell;
Standing on the threshold of transient sanity,
Finally overcoming the last of life's vanities.

All barriers have fallen, no illusions prevail,
Nothing to interrupt the horror of my POW tale;
For to contemplate death, and have an appointed date,
Relieves one of many maddening foibles of fate.

For now, I can see eyes glowing in the abyss,
And worry not o'er any moral flaws, I may be remiss;
For strangely enough, the reaper's looming in sight,
It makes for an almost surreal peace at night.

And I take comfort to know, that never again shall I fear,
For the reaper's rancid breath, has whispered in my ear;
And like some haunting melody, at first I couldn't understand,
Finally its refrain mesmerized me, and bade death to take my hand.
