Steps to overcome doubt

While we decide on steps to overcome doubt, please remember that "doubt" is not always a bad thing to have. Doubts have been known to save lives. But, at the same time, too much of anything is bad. So the following steps should help you overcome any doubt you have:

Step 1. Ask yourself why you are having a particular doubt.

Step 2. Answer yourself truthfully. Be honest even if it means accepting something you don't even want to think about.

Step 3. List the reasons for your doubt on a piece of paper or on your computer. The important thing here is "typing" or "writing", not just thinking.

Step 4. Try and eradicate the doubts one by one. Talk to the person concerned if it is regarding people. If it is regarding an event, get as much information as possible to help you come to a conclusion. If it is about yourself, look inwards. Nobody knows you better that you do. But you have to be sincere in your attempts. Don't just look for answers you want, look for the truth. Do whatever is needed to verify your doubts. Even if it means having to face an unfavorable situation.

Step 5. After you have ironed out all the information, the pros, the cons and the details, your doubt may still persist. Now, if the verification process clearly proved your doubt to be pointless and you are still pondering over it, maybe you should just block your mind from that particular thought and do something which makes you happy.

Step 6. In case of such persistent doubts, concentrate on your work or your hobby. Focus on the people around you, people you care about.

Step 7. If the doubt shows no sign of going away, talk to a friend. Your friend could be your relative too. Anybody who knows you and can help you.

Step 8. Keep repeating to yourself all the reasons why your doubt is pointless. You could even write or type them down so you can look at them from time to time.

Step 9. Meditate. Nothing like a little mind exercise to clear your head.

Step 10. Exercise. If you engage in some physical activity, your body will release endorphins forcing out all negative thoughts. You will have a positive frame of mind and feel happy. Also, there is always the fringe benefit of a fitter and healthier body.

Step 11. If nothing works, please consult a professional.

Make sure you do everything you can to remove all traces of a meaningless doubt. Because, living with a doubt can make you miserable apart from having an adverse effect on your health.
