Reflections: Rudeness in today's society

Rudeness in Today's Society

Today's society is much different than in years past. People seem to be in such a big hurry, they don't have time to be courteous or thoughtful of others. It seems like they are rushing through life without taking the time to enjoy it.

It's virtually impossible to keep your place in line when waiting for the store door or theater door to open. Some anxious person will crowd his way ahead of you and if you aren't careful you'll be left standing in the end of the line. Or someone will rush out ahead of you because they have an urgent appointment somewhere else.

Some people don't realize how much more pleasant life can be if you take it easy, move a little bit slower, and think about the people around them. As an example, once when I attended an early sale at a department store, I finally got inside after being pushed aside a few times. When I picked up a shirt out of a bin full of them, I hardly got to read the size or find out the price of the shirt before another woman grabbed it right out of my hand. That was rudeness with a capital R. I wonder if she thought that was the only shirt on sale that day. I have learned not to go to the early-in-the-morning Christmas sales because it's too dangerous.

Some people drive through parking lots like they are the only ones there. Do they think they own the parking lot? You'd think so the way they dart in and out of cars to find exactly the parking space they want. I almost got run over one day just getting out of my car. The parking lots are almost more dangerous than the freeways these days.

You take your life in your hands to go shopping.. Most people seem to be so busy these days, they don't even have time to stop and say hello when they run into you downtown. Why is it almost everyone is in such a hurry these days, they don't even have time to be neighborly. It seems it's so important to get things done. We rush past each other to get to the next task and sometimes we don't even realize how our being in a hurry all the time causes us to be downright rude.

Wouldn't it be nice if we all slowed down a bit to enjoy life and each other? I think it would do away with a lot of rudeness we see today. Today's society is just too much in a hurry. Maybe it would help if we passed a law that forced everyone to wear a personal speedometer on their person and stay within a sensible speed limit, even when walking. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could eliminate rudeness altogether?

The End
