Reflections: My favorite smell

by Teri Vance

Created on: September 07, 2008

I stumbled across this article as I sit here by myself, on this chilly, rainy night, and thought to myself, "What an interesting subject". There are so many smells I can think of that I absolutely love, that I could never whittle this subject down to only one favorite smell. Shall we see where this musing takes us?

I love the smell of rain. It is actually a cool night here where I am writing this article, so I have my windows raised, and yes, it is raining as I write this. I not only love the smell of rain, I love the sound of the rain. There is nothing I can think of more soothing than the smell, and the sound of a gentle rain. Especially at night. (I am betting I will be able to sleep well tonight!)

I love the smell of home, made from scratch, bread baking in the oven. The aroma from that, just makes me feel all warm from the inside out. That smell makes my mouth absolutely water. I can not wait to take the bread from the oven, slather real butter on it, and just totally be one with ecstasy!

I love the smell of Baby shampoo. My kids are older now, but what I wouldn't give, if I were able, for even just one day, to go back to when the were tiny babies, and smell that fresh, clean smell of the baby shampoo, right after I had given them their bath. To be able to feel their tiny, little warm bodies in my arms again, and have that "baby" smell just one more time.

I love the smell of fresh cut grass on a hot summer day. It is such a clean smell. I honestly wish there was a way to bottle that smell, so we could use it as an air freshener during the cold winter months.

I love the smell of Coppertone suntan lotion. A smell that reminds me of my childhood, and going to the beach. A total summer smell, that if they could only somehow mix with the fresh cut grass aroma, and bottle it, would make the company that could market THAT, a fortune!

I love the smell of Lilacs blooming. Years ago, I had two purple Lilac bushes on either side of my driveway, and in the spring time when they would bloom, the breeze would bring the scent into my living room windows. Which reminds me .............

I love the smell of Honeysuckle. When I was little, my Grandpa, whom I called "Poppy", had a big front porch, with a porch swing. On the South side of said porch, was the biggest Honeysuckle vine, winding its way up the trellis, right next to the swing. I would sit and swing, and pick those Honeysuckle blossoms, and suck the sweetness out of the ends of the flowers. Those were the good
