High blood sugar, or hyperglycemia has many different symptoms. Doctors all say that each individual diabetic may have one or two symptoms while others have all of them. As a mother of two type 1 diabetic kids and a type 2 diabetic husband, I can attest to the fact that this statement is true. Here are the common symptoms followed by ones I have noticed while taking care of my family.
Dry Mouth and Thirst. This is one of the symptoms that most every diabetic gets first. They can drink a gallon of Gatorade and still be thirsty. My daughter has been known to drink four diet drinks and several glasses of ice water within an hour when her blood sugar is high.
Frequent urination. This is another common sign, as the more a person drinks, the more they will need to urinate.
Fatigue. One of the first signs we noticed in our son. A usually energetic child who never seemed to stop, who suddenly was falling asleep at the drop of a hat. One moment he would be awake and the next asleep.
Slow Healing of Wounds. When a diabetic gets a cut, a burn whatever it takes two to three times longer for them to heal than someone who does not have diabetes.
Weight Loss. Something I have again witnessed in both my children and my husband. All three have lost some weight and while for a type 2 diabetic, losing weight is good, it is only that way if lost the right way. What I mean by that is, if the diabetic person is exercising a lot and eating the right foods, great. If they aren't doing anything differently and they start dropping weight fast that could be a sign of high blood sugar that has led to ketones, which is very bad.
If all of these symptoms occur and the person overlooks them or does not get help for their high blood sugars they could end up with ketoacidosis or fall into a diabetic coma. Ketones are a by-product of breaking down fats when blood sugars are high. These ketones cause acidity in the blood, thus the name "ketoacidosis" or DKA for short. It's a very serious condition that can lead to death if not taken care of. My son has been rushed to the hospital and put in ICU twice, my daughter once and I can tell you, there is nothing scarier than having a doctor tell you that your daughter had been a half an hour away from death if she hadn't checked into the hospital, or your son's heart beating so strongly that you can see his chest going up and down with each beat. While repeatedly having high blood sugars or forgetting or skipping medications is the usual reason for ketoacidosis,
