Depending on what kind of music manager you are; music manager duties can considerably vary. One thing however is always for sure; as a music manager the responsibilities are massive. You're in total control and if anything goes wrong the blame will be very heavily placed upon you.
As a music manager you're in charge of all areas; contract management, appearances, and possibly even gig booking. There are all different sorts of music managers and specific roles can therefore vary; it's a stressful job however and one which requires a lot time, effort, and careful consideration also.
When it comes to gig booking there are many further more minor duties to be considered by the music manager. You'll need to choose where the artist is going to play, whether they'll be headlining or supporting another artist, what the venue set-up is going to be like; will there be barriers for instance, will backing singers or session musicians be required etc. Every minor detail must be considered, everything has to be perfect, and if it's not then the music manager may find that they have a lot of questions to answer from the artist and everyone else involved.
A gig diary must be kept at all times by the music manager, it's important that you never make double-bookings; everything needs to be checked carefully and it needs to be made sure that the diary is kept a close eye on so that there will be no major booking issues. Gigs can play a very important role in an artist's career, it's therefore very important that a music manager always picks gigs to be played that are best suited to the artists strengths in order for the artist to progress, improve, and ultimately become more commercially successful as promptly as possible.
The music manager must make sure that the artist is always happy, even when the music manager is under great stress it's important that the artist remains motivated and it is the music manager's job to make sure that the artist does not get down and impressed. The artist always needs to be performing to the best of their ability and the music manager is in charge of making sure that this is possible.
A music manager is there to motivate, is there to keep the artist happy, and is there to organise almost everything to do with the artist. A music managers work never ends, always a music manager has much to do; phone calls to make, letters to write, and e-mails to send. If a music manager is not always busy then they're not a very good music manager; a good music manager always is busy and always is working. When it comes to music there's much to be done, a lot to be kept in order, and masses of music related work to keep on top of at all times.
A music manager can be provided with all sorts of responsibilities, a music manager is there to do whatever is requested of them by the artist and more still; a good music manager will always do more than is asked of them and will always be looking to impress at all times. Every music manager will require to be able to do a range of different duties and no separate music managers job will ever be exactly the same to that of another. The duties are very varied and unique to each and every different music manager. Being a music manager is a great job to have; it's highly rewarding but also very hard. It's hard to list the exact duties of a music manager as all music managers duties will be different; a music managers duties are very varied and always there is lots to be done.
