Americans love celebrities. We want to know everything about them from what they're eating to who they're dating. And I'm sure we all have at least one special star who we've Googled; searching for candids of them grocery shopping or walking their dog. We jump at anything to confirm that our beloved stars are human.
So why is it that on those rare chances when we come face-to-face with these stars the first thing we do is forget they are human. Mauling them like they are the last Tickle Me Elmo on Christmas Eve, some fans cry or scream; some simply shove the nearest napkin, t-shirt or body part into their celebrity's general direction with requests of an autograph; while others try stealing articles of clothing, wisps of hair or their dinner fork anything to prove they were in the presence of one of America's royalty.
But what many tabloid magazines have lead me to believe is: celebrities really just want to be treated like one of us. So that is what we must do. Yes, they are beautiful, you may feel like you know them, you may possibly have their image postered to your bedroom ceiling and, yes, it will be hard but the most important thing to remember when encountering a celeb-spotting is to maintain a certain amount of civility. At least until you are our of their personal space and preferably out of their ear-shot.
So, what does that mean?
Do not follow them into the bathroom, dressing room, hospital or any other place you would not want to be hassled at. Do politely approach them, without interrupting, and avoid overstaying your welcome. Most stars would be happy to hear you loved their last film, however save the fact that you can recite their entire autobiography verbatim. From memory. Keep that for your fan club meetings.
Do not invite yourself to squeeze in beside them at the bar, during their lunch or basically any time. Most celebrities are gracious enough to take a few minutes to sign autographs, but contrary to what we might believe at that moment, we did not just become best friends with them. Do try your best to simply get in and get out, and let them go about their day. Remember: asking for an autograph is expected. Even one for your mom is ok too. But two dozen that you intend to auction off on Ebay? Not so cool.
Do not take this time to critique their singing, dancing or acting abilities. Remember: this is their job. You wouldn't like if some random person approached you to evaluate last week's fiscal report. And do NOT began any conversation related to who they are dating, speculated addictions or any other rumors you read while waiting in the grocery store check-out line. Do feel free to offer a genuine complement on their work, however. After all, there is some reason why you like them so much. But keep this to a minimum to avoid coming off as a stalker
All things in mind, most celerities will say they truly enjoy hearing from, and meeting their fans. Your respectfulness will be sure to make this experience enjoyable for both you and your favorite celeb.
And don't worry once you are safely out of earshot, feel free to jump up and down like a pre-teen maniac.
