Short stories: Senior moments

I started thinking of my mother and the love that I have for her. What a wonderful and holy example I have in my life to show me what a parent is to be. Sometimes I cannot seem to grasp the fact that my chldren are grown because they should still be babies, as I am sure mom thinks that way of us.
I saw in my mind a picture. Mom was on the front porch in the evening with her never-ending glass of tea. The hill was green and alive with color. The sun was beginning to set and threw a beautiful variety of hues and shadows over everything. Everything was peaceful and right with the world. She was waiting for dad to come home. The noises in the air were birds chirping and singing, the crickets making their melody, and the squirrels were chattering in the tree branches in the yard. She heard the usual evening noises.

Then she heard it, that was the small branch gurgling softly. She heard the laughter and splashing. " We can tell mom we fell in, so we won't get into trouble." "Okay," more laughter came. " Those girls, haven't they figured out by now that I am onto their little scam?" "They haven't fooled me one bit", but they sure think they have.
A wild scream penetrated the air. There is nothing like a snake scream. "Kill it!" "Kill it!" " I am going to tell mom you tried to kill me with a snake." " You better not tell mom or you'll be sorry, I'll stick it on you the next time." " That Cathy she is always aggravating somebody." " What she can't think of?" Then silence. "The girls must have killed it, because I don't hear any more aabout the snake."
We had better get back to the house, mom may need our help with something and we have been gone long enough anyway. " You little ones had better get into some dry clothes before you get sick." " You three little ones had better not tell that we went swimming." " You stick to the story that we fell in trying to cross the branach.
Mom looked toward the branch, but no one came. Where had the time gone? Yesterday, they were little girls, they were my babies, now their babies are grown. My girls' babies are having babies of their own. I am not old so how can my girls be grandmothers?
Mom was never far away. She set the example of what should be and it was to be. Every so often thought, a little bit of dat crept in.
Thank you mom for always being there. Thank you for putting us girls first, before you and for all the unconditional love that was there for free.
Thank you for giving us to Jesus.
Love you always and forever
