isn't a medical test specifically for autism, so diagnosis may be difficult. A formal evaluation of observing your child and discussing your child's skills and behavior will help the doctor determine autism. Your child may undergo a series of tests covering speech, language and psychological issues before the doctor makes their final determination. Diagnosis may not be determined until as late as ages 2 or 3 when delays are more obvious.
Currently, there's no cure for autism and there's no one treatment that is suitable for all children. However, there is plenty of treatments available to you. First, there is behavioral and communication therapies. These programs address the range of social, language and behavioral difficulties associated with autism. They may teach your child new skills and reduce behavior problems. Next, there are drug therapies. There currently aren't any drugs to improve the signs of autism, but there are medications to help control the symptoms. These can help with such behavior as hyperactivity, aggressive behavior and repetitive movements. Finally, there are interventions with education and medicine. There are complementary therapies such as art therapy, music therapy, special diets, vitamin supplements. There's no proof that any these techniques work, so always ask your doctor first.
Children with autism often respond to a highly structured education program. This may include a team of specialists and a variety of activities to improve social skills, communication and behavior. A child is always going to have Autism, but treatments can give them the best life possible. Don't get too exhausted with your autistic child. Work with your trusted professionals, make time for yourself and other family members, seek out other families that have autistic children, and learn all you can about the disorder. Knowledge is power, and there is hope.
