Why It Pays to Have Good Morals?
If you know what is good for you, believe me, you will adopt and stick with a code of good morals, a set of principles about right and wrong behavior.
In another words, it pays to live by an ethical code of conduct that is beneficial to both you and everybody else. You ask, why? For example, if I am your neighbor, I am going to care how you conduct yourself around me and my family. I expect you to be a considerate person and act in a neighborly manner. You know what I mean, "Do unto others as you have them do unto you."
There are plenty of people who oftentimes turn that "Golden Rule" into that other familiar rule, "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth".
God forbid, if your neighbor or co-worker feels you disrespected him or her, and follows that last rule, he could turn your life into a nightmare.
Relax, if you live next to me, my morals will restrain me from giving you a bad time.
Here's an example of a man who seemingly had everything going for him and has now bit the dust. He apparently didn't have much value for good morals. Jack Abramoff, the once powerful lobbyist of Washington, was sentenced to four more years in prison last Thursday by a judge who said the case had shattered the public's confidence in government. He has already served two years in prison for a casino violation in Florida.
"Over the past three years, Abramoff has come to symbolize corruption and the secret deals cut between lobbyists and politicians.
"The scandal shook Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House to Capitol Hill and contributed to the Republicans' loss of Congress in 2006", Associated Press September 5, 2008.
Here's another perspective on morals for you. Let's look at "office politics". Ambition and competition can be very healthy aspects of a strong vibrant society. There is however, a very fine line between what's good for you and what's fair to dish out to your competitors. I mean, let's not kid ourselves, we all want pay raises and promotions, right?
Here's what I am referring to, me and another guy were competing for a sales manager position. Both of us were top salesmen for the corporation we worked for. We knew each other very well. My competitor practiced more "office politics" then I did, and subsequently, got the promotion.
I felt hurt and angry over this incident. My initial reaction was a strong desire to retaliate. In another words, I could very easily have been a thorn in this guys side, by really bad mouthing him. God knows, I had
