Drains are easy to take for granted until there is a problem. You can avoid a costly plumber's bill by becoming more aware of what actually goes down your drains.
Every drain in your home becomes a magnet for different types of potentially clogging debris. If ignored, the residue can produce unwanted odors. With just a few habit changes, you can keep your drains clear and clean smelling.
The kitchen sink drain attracts pieces of food that may have missed the garbage disposal or passed through because you didn't have your drain stopper in place. Grease, in liquid or solid form, should never be flushed down a drain.
In the bathroom, hair is the number one drain clogging enemy. Drain covers designed for this purpose are worth the money. Resist pouring any leftover body oils down bathroom sinks. Men, if you are using a thick, moisturizing shaving gel be aware that these products can form a clogging residue that attracts mildew in a drain. Other than toilet paper, no other paper products should be flushed down a toilet.
In the utility room, basement or garage, buckets filled with dirty water after finishing a household chore often end up poured down these drains. Although they are handy, resist pouring the leftovers from pesticides, outside mechanical oils, lubricating oils or car motor oils down these drains. Many of these products contain petroleum, a drain clogging ingredient. (Be aware that this action is also prohibited by the Environmental Protection Agency,)
One good habit to form is to allow hot water to flow through a drain for a minute after use. How do you keep drains cleaner longer? Follow this simple and natural method:
Baking Soda Mixture: Use one cup of baking soda poured down the drain followed by three cups boiling water, and one cup of vinegar. Not only will this mixture bubble and fizz away small clogs, but it will wash away odors too.
Natural Enzyme Drain Cleaners: Can be safely used monthly, and are available in health food stores.
If your drain becomes clogged, reach first for your trusty plunger. Work up a good suction motion. Plumber's snakes, used with care, are also effective in breaking up a clogged drain. If your drain remains clogged, before calling your plumber, proceed with caution and try one of the stronger lye based products after carefully reading the directions.
