I can understand most people not liking light beer. It can be a tough choice to switch once you have been drinking "non-light" beer for a long time. I found it to be a rough transition myself. Even though I am a female I had been drinking "non-light" beer for a number of years and have no intention of ever switching full time.
A friend of mine introduced me to one he thought I would enjoy that he had found. It was a domestic light beer. At first I found it disgusting because I was a one beer girl and vowed to never switch. My friend was not surprised in the least at my reaction and told me that if I tried it a few more times I would grow to like it more than my normal beer choice. I frowned on this immediately.
After a few months had gone by we were at my friend's house and he offered me a beer. I didn't know that he was planning a little barbecue that day, so I was unprepared with my own trusty brand of "non-light" beer. Reluctantly,I accepted and ended up drinking them for the rest of the night. We actually ran out and I gave him some money to pitch in on more of his light brand.
I found that when I did have my beer and had already drunk a few his brand was disgusting to me. However, when I started drinking his light brand and only drank that, it was just fine to me. Don't get me wrong at home, on my own time, of course I still buy my usual brand because it is still my favorite. But, I am not discouraged anymore by the though of something different.
My personal belief is that when you already have one type of beer that you have drank then any other will not taste right for that night. If you start with the light beer it will be just fine. Many of us get so personal with our own brand that we lose open mindedness to anything new. And most of the time the brand we want is the one we watched our dads drink our whole life.
It is not a sin to steer away from the norm in your beer drinking adventures. I am actually more open to this after my experience. I no longer care if the beer is light or not. I try to stay open to the new experience.
No matter who you are there is always going to be beer that you just can't stand. I for one hate dark ale. I want nothing to do with the stuff it tastes odd and not right to me. And the same is true with some of the light beers out there. But, I will not discourage tasting something light or not anymore. I just try now to make sure that I haven't had anything else to drink before trying something new.
