You finally got to the point where you can't take those leaking pipes or worse yet, you have sewage backing up through your drains. Now is the time to hire a plumber. What should you look for in a plumber? What is the essential information you will need before hiring a plumber?
Competence
This has to be the #1 criteria ahead of even cost. If you hire an unqualified plumber, especially based on costs, you might have to pay for your repair twice. How do you know your plumber is qualified? Look for these things before hiring a plumber:
Ask how long they have been in business. Longevity is a good sign of competence.
Ask if they are licensed. Qualified plumbers are licensed in the state in which they work. The plumber you hire should provide you with their state license number. You can also, in most states, call and verify this information.
Make sure the plumber you hire is insured and bonded. Plumbers can run into unexpected problems that can damage your house and property. A properly insured and bonded plumber will take responsibility.
Before You Hire
Ask the plumber for names of two or three people they have done work for. Ask if the work was done to their satisfaction.
Don't expect to get prices over the phone. A reputable plumber will have to come out to your home to give you an estimate.
Make sure you get the estimate in writing. If the plumber won't do this, tell him goodbye.
Ask what work will be done and ask about cleanup. Major plumbing work can create lots of dirt and debris. Make sure the plumber you hire will take care of this.
Cost
A good plumber does not come cheap. They bring knowledge and expertise with them. Remember, If you could do it yourself, you wouldn't need to call in a pro. This is approximately what you can expect as far as costs.
Expect to pay around $45.00 to $65.00 per hour for routine repairs.
Nights, weekends and emergencies will cost you more.
Major work, such as sewer repairs, will cost approximately $125.00 per hour.
Make sure you ask the plumber you hire how his hourly rate works. Does the clock start when he leaves his shop or does the rate kick in when he shows up at your door?
Hiring a plumber for your repairs doesn't have to be a daunting task, but in order to get quality work, it might take a little homework on your part.
