When people mention the word integrity we may think of honesty. Some may simply define it as being good. However, if we truly break down the meaning of the word, we find that it means so much more. Integrity is not just the description of a value, but a state of being. It is multiple values working together to attain a level of excellence guided by principles and moral obligations. When a person has integrity they consistently choose and act in conjunction with the values of honesty and courage while meeting the challenges of responsibility and accountability.
HONESTY
Say what you mean and mean what you say. Double talk is not the path to integrity but to injustice and corruption. Integrity requires that truth is spoken and protected. Honesty creates a solid foundation for integrity while dishonesty will crack it. Speaking the truth and choosing actions that demonstrate that truth will allow a person to be open and transparent in their decisions laying the cornerstone of integrity.
COURAGE
The world is converging with the advent of the global economy. The growth of the international community fosters many opportunities for all. These opportunities bring the possibility of prosperity but also temptation. Temptation to cheat and gain a little on the side. Courage allows a person to continue building on integrity's foundation against the storm of corruption. A courageous person finds the strength to walk their talk.
RESPONSIBILITY
Integrity requires that a person not shirk responsibility. Rising up to challenges and recognizing expectations that are right under your own roof will help in leading a life with integrity. Know your job and what or who depends on you. Follow through using your principles and values as your guide. Fulfill your responsibilities with honesty and courage and integrity will always be within reach.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Any action or choice will have consequences. Though often given a negative connotation, the word consequence simply means a result. Consequences are the outcomes of our decisions. Integrity dictates that a person must be held responsible for his actions. Standing by your decisions under harsh criticisms and admitting mistakes when they happen are vital to being accountable.
The choices we make on a daily basis, large or small, reflect who we are and what we stand for. Integrity is a wholeness of thought and action. It is meeting responsibilities with honesty and courage, admitting what you do not know and owning what you do, standing up to falsehoods when all else sit, and facing all outcomes good or bad with dignity. Integrity: what the world needs and what we should all desire.
