Indoor gardening: Growing your own vegetables and herbs indoors during the winter

by Serena

Gardening indoors is a wonderful way to grow plants, and especially if you don't have an outdoor garden area such as those living in apartment buildings or shop houses. Indoor gardening is a wonderful tool for those who have very little space, those who can't be out in the sun due to skin sensitivity and for those who are unable to bend. Indoor gardening offers a way to grow tropical plants that can't tolerate harsh outdoor weather. It is best to stick with the same basic schedule for indoor gardening as you do with outdoor gardening for when to plant which vegetables. Indoor gardening lets you to see the subtle changes that occur as plants grow, mature, and blossom.

Indoor gardeners also love the fact that there is very little weed problem, no hot sun shining down on them, and it is so much easier to have good soil without covering a large area. In fact if you are using the hydroponics method, no soil is required too. This will be elaborated later. You can start vegetables from seed much easier indoors because you don't have to wait for certain weather conditions.

Indoor vegetables can be grown easily in any pot or container. You can learn how to prepare containers and soil for a beautiful and inexpensive indoor garden. Ceramic containers seem to be the favorite among indoor gardeners. Starting your indoor gardens from nursery purchased plants is fun because you have instant beauty in your containers.

Plants grown in containers need more care and more attention than plants grown outside. Sometimes new, small plants have to be watered more than once a day. So ensure that before you carry out your indoor gardening that the plants you wish to grow will receive an adequate amount of sunlight. The only downside that is usually found in indoor gardening is the watering. However, this too can be overcome with the hydroponics method.

Plants that demand high lighting will do well placed near southern or western windows. Low light plants do great situated near northern or eastern exposures and can be placed up to 2 feet away. If natural lighting in your home is insufficient, place artificial grow lights or fluorescent lights near your plants.

Herbs are another favorite for indoor gardeners. Hydroponics is the easy way to grow fresh herbs. With hydroponics gardening you grow without soil, in a nutritionally balanced solution for incredible growth, better than soil. Hydroponics technology has been improving, and time and again produces the biggest, freshest vegetables in the smallest of spaces.

Growing plants indoors is especially fun and rewarding. Window sills, ladders, ledges, shelves, tables, and just about anything, can be used to make a beautiful indoor garden. Plant stands are an excellent way to show off your indoor gardens.
