It pays to have good morals because if you don't then you automatically disconnect yourself from being close to others, as well as harming those around you. If you lie and deceive people you separate yourself from them spiritually and emotionally. This is the only way that you can behave in an immoral fashion.
When we feel connected to individuals we are more likely to act with love towards them. They in turn are more likely to act morally towards us and with love if they feel connected to us. It is only when we separate ourselves from others that immorality can creep in.
The lack of empathy and understanding that goes along with a lack of morals is a sign that the perpetrator is a pretty lonely person. They may have others around them who feign respect for them, or who act in a loyal way, but their actions stem from fear rather than kindness or unconditional love.
When we do not have good morals it means that we don't see others as truly feeling beings. If we have empathy with them then we can connect with them and form friendships and relationships that bring us pleasure and rewards that being lonely and immoral and never bring.
As human beings we are designed to act as a unit. We are not meant to be alone. When we act as a whole society, for the good of that society, we form bonds and help the human race to progress.
When we are immoral, and so emotionally bereft of true closeness with others, we become unhappy. This is because we need closeness with others in order to feel well. The more we commit immoral acts the further away we become to the rest of society.
In the end, those who are immoral seek out others who are like them in a desperate measure to form bonds to satisfy their needs. Then they become embroiled in a situation that involves a them and us mentality. Immoral people tend to stick together.
For some this heralds a life of crime where they learn from others to adopt a criminal lifestyle. if they don't get caught then they may reap the benefit rewards relating to the crimes that they have committed in monetary terms. However, they still experience a disconnection from society and loneliness prevails. No amount of immoral acts can ever fill the gap where loneliness resides.
When we act with good morals we project positive feelings out to others. In this way we emotionally reach out to them in a healing way. This is the opposite to behaving immorally towards another. When we behave immorally towards another we project negativity and pain. The result of this is that we become outcasts as we come to be known as being bad.
