This is a serious subject to me because my mother is a female runner. There are so many dangers for women who jog outdoors. Women are aware of these dangers and it does affect them. I hope that this article will give you tips on how to feel better and safer while exercising.
First of all, regardless of whether or not you run with an AK-47. DO NOT RUN AT NIGHT! Not only is this dangerous with regards to muggers, criminals, and the type of people that I do not want to even mention. It is very difficult for oncomming traffic to see runners at night. The chances of you getting hit by a car are much higher at night.
Before getting to the women specific tips, I have one more tip for all runners. If you run on the street, do not listen to music. I know this is extremely challenging for some of you because music is so motivating to run that extra mile. However, it prevents you from hearing cars passing. It can even prevent you from hearing a car honking at you. It is obvious how this can be dangerous. Unfortunately, people have been killed because they were listening to music while running on the road.
Here is how to stay safe during the day. I will use the example of my mother. When she goes out to run, she goes with my aunt and my cousin (a male). I am not saying that women cannot protect themselves, however, seeing a male in the group does cause criminals to hesitate attacking a group of women. Even if you cannot find a male. Try and run with a large group of women. Not only can this be safe, but it could also be very fun.
This next piece advice may sound extreme, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Purchase one of those little baggies that you clip around your waste, then purchase a bottle of pepper spray. Put the pepper spray in the bag, clip it to your waste, and be ready to reach for it if you feel threatened by anyone while you are running.
In order to avoid dangerous situations, do not run on isolated paths that are heavily wooded and have a lot of trees. This is because it is very easy for someone to hide around corners or in the trees. Avoid these types of paths even more so at night.
Please ladies be safe while you run. Get some pepper spray, get a fun group to run with, stay away from isolated areas (especially at night), and have a good time. If you follow these guidelines, there is no need to feel uncomfortable while you are getting your exercise in. Thank you for reading and be safe.
