Exploring the underground New Age movements on MySpace

I discovered what I affectionately term the "MySpace New Age Underground" quite by accident here a little more than two years ago. I had been looking for New Age musical artist Kitaro's homepage, and that's just where it happened to be on MySpace. I had always heard that MySpace was a place for little kids and the sick adults that pursue them, and had never had any real interest in checking out the site, previously. I grew mildly intrigued, though, when I found Kitaro there. Being the kind of person I surmise that he is, I couldn't imagine that he would choose a den of deviance to host his main page and to promote his music. So, after I signed up and sent a friend request to him, I decided to give the place a look-see.

I navigated to the "Groups Home" page since I have always loved forums of all sorts. I was involved in groups back before there was a public internet, when the main PC to PC communication were individual bulletin board systems, when we all still had to dial each board manually, and only a few of us could be online at that site at a time. I know, you can hardly begin to imagine such a thing, I'm sure! It had been many years since I had really investigated social networking online, and I was overwhelmed and delighted with what I found when I typed into the "Search Groups" box the words, "New Age". There were literally thousands of groups that met their standards for the search. Of course, not all of them actually applied to the subject matter, and still others were not all that great, but there were many, many forums for discussion of New Age philosophy and the experiences engendered therein. They are listed in order of membership numbers, so the best are usually fairly easy to find, though there are gems further down the list as well!

I started joining groups, and I started making more friends. I filled out and designed my profile, and became a fast and friendly member of the site. Over these last couple of years I have learned and shared a lot with these groups and people, eventually even creating a main group and a sister group of my own, which led to the creation of my own site about 10 months ago. The relationships I have formed on MySpace have been rich and diverse, and many of them have grown to be quite special. No one could have previously told me that so many people who were focusing on the perfection of Love and the use of Light in their lives would have gathered on such a site!

So, don't judge a book by its cover. MySpace's cover has been
