This is a delicate subject, and it will arouse ire in some of you, but the title says it all, great, or not so great, books that criticize religion. I can only quote what other men have said, "If I have seen further than others, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants." These men were giants and no mistake.
I have studied religion and where it came from for over 20 years now, and to say that I do not believe the Bible is an understatement. First you must be willing to accept the credentials of the author, and how he/she came into possesion of what they have written.
Would you accept the word of a justice of the supreme court with all the credentials that they must have to hold that position? Joseph Wheless was a judge advocate general of the United states, he codified Spanish law, and was a distinguished member of the bar for many years. He wrote from the mental stand point of a lawyer, and a simple assertion made in our Bible was not good enough for him. He wrote from a view that if you wrote it down and asked folks to believe it then it MUST have some truth to it or it is not to be believed. His book is strong medicine, and you may not like what he has to say, but if what he has to say will make you think, then he has done his job. He does an especially good job on the fables Exodus.
The book is "Is it God's word?" ISBN 1-56459-226-x published by the Kessinger Publishing co. in Montana. You can get it over the net, and it is a reprint of his original book from 1926 or thereabouts. I strongly recommend it.
The second book - of many- is "Deceptions and myths of the Bible" by Lloyd M. Graham,
ISBN 0-9065-1124-9 published by Citadel press. It may not be in print now.
He compares the myths and legends from long before the Bible was collated, to the various myths and legends that were "adopted" "rewritten" "swiped" "purloined" "cobbed" (Pick the one you like) from a "jillion" different PAGAN sources.
The dying and risen God-figure was ancient history LONG before the time of Jesus, and we have records of some 30 different ones. I have a list of them.
If you have the mind set that likes convoluted mixtures of many religions find a copy of "Anacalypisis" by Godfrey Higgins, published by A&B book publishers in New York.
It is a monumental work done long ago and it is a staggering amount of data that must have been trying to collect way back there. This was in the days of no phones, no internet, and slow postal service. He did a staggering amount of work to write what he did.
These men do not believe the Bible and they put their money where there mouths are!
I would be interested in any comments folks might have. fmcnary@aol.com
