For most people, their Myspace profile is their home on the world wide web. As such, you should see it as both a reflection and extension of yourself. When you decorate your home or your room, don't you choose colors that your like and display objects that reflect your interests? Of course you do, and your Myspace page should be no different.
There's a lot you can do with a Myspace page. You should start by thinking about what colors you like. As you think of which colors you like, make sure they go well together, and most importantly, make sure the color of your text stands out from your background. I've seen too many pages where people have used combinations such as pink backgrounds and purple text, or black backgrounds and dark grey text. It's very hard to read, and annoying. Besides a good contrast between your background and your text, also choose one or two colors to compliment your profile. With most Myspace editors, you an control the color of borders, scroll bars, and headings. Create an eye catching theme with a few colors and stick to it throughout. By the way, you may also want to use a background image for your page. Again, make sure it is large enough, and text is easily visible.
That brings me to the Myspace editots. You can very easily code your page by hand if you're familiar with HTML. I am, but I prefer the speed and simplicity of using an editor. My advice is to go to Google or Yahoo, search for "Myspace layouts" or "Myspace editor", and check out a few different sites. Layout sites will give you themes that have already been created, while Myspace editors will give you the ability to control every detail from border colors to font size. The choice is up to you
One you have a page you like, it's time to fill in some information about yourself. My advice is to be fun, and keep descriptions about yourself and who you would like to meet conversational. I find pages that are formally written to be boring. When you're filling out your page, also keep in mind that you can make your profile public or private. If it is public, you might want to watch what you say if you ar concerned about family, friends, or employers finding out certain things. You could make it private, but if you do, you'll probably have less of a chance of meeting new people. It depends on your goals and why you're there in the first place.
Now that your myspace profile looks good and is informative, we need it to sound good. You can visit the Myspace music section and search for your favorite musician. Chances are they have a page, and they will have one of your facorite songs on their profile. If you look on their profile, you will see a music player with a list of songs. Next to each song, there should be an "add" link. If you click that, the song will appear on your profile. You can also find fancier music player that will allow you to play more songs. Keep an eye on other people's pages to find links to sites with good music players, or do a search for "Myspace music players". You'll probably find something good.
Last but not least, you need some pictures. Myspace used to allow only eight pictures to be posted, but now you can post as many as you want. You can also organize them into different photo albums. You can write short descriptions for all your photos, and even e-mail them to friends. My advice, once again, is to remember that everybody can see your photos, unless you make them private. Keep that in mind.
There are the basics for setting up your Myspace page. It's a work in progress, and you'll probably end up changing it frequently. Now that you're done, leave some comments and let your friends know how good your page looks!
