"Twice a Love Lost"
Michael sat at the bar, staring at his glass of rum and coke, wondering how exactly he got here. He hated himself for allowing his friends to talk him into going out tonight. It was only the second time since his divorce that he had left the house on a Friday night, not because he was having a hard time accepting the divorce but because he wasn't ready yet to try dating again. He had spent the greater portion of his life with Kayla and with her he never had to try, she seemed to always know what he meant and what he wanted. There were never any games with her, it seemed destined from the start. He is not sure what happened or why it ended, perhaps there wasn't anything left to bind them together now that the children were gone. Their love was centered on the children and when they moved off to start their own lives suddenly they had realized that there was no love left between them. It made him sad to think about all the good times, and even sadder when he thought about the bad ones. He looked around the club, everyone laughing and dancing, celebrating the end of another long work week, but he had nothing to celebrate. He longed for work for it gave him something to focus on rather than the state of turmoil that his life was currently in. He quickly decided that it was time to go, he couldn't put himself through anymore and his friends would surely have a better time without him.
He stood up, said good-bye to his friends, but as he turned towards the door he saw it. A face he hadn't seen in years, it had changed some since he had last seen it but remained just as perfect as he had once remembered. She was standing at the door her red hair longer than she had worn it before, falling down the length of her back. Her eyes were the same only older, but there was still a fire in them that he recognized. Her smile was just the same, the kind that made you smile in spite of yourself and made everyone envious of her. It had been at least fifteen years since they had seen each other, back then she was young and ready to take on the world, he was older and much more settled than her but had admired her spirit. They had so much in common, including the fact that they had both been married at the time, and they instantly became the best of friends. He didn't know how it happened but one day it changed, he looked at her and suddenly began to feel something change inside of him. He found himself desiring her despite the wife that waited for him at home.
