A new dog is an exciting addition to the family, especially if you find a good match. It is important to do your research before making your choice. Ask yourself what are your reasons for wanting a dog. Are you wanting a guard dog or just a good companion? Do you have children, do you live in an apartment? All of these things and more must be answered if you are to make an informed decision.

A dog requires attention and needs responsible owners. They require feeding, exercise, love, and attention. Many breeds live for up to 20 years so this is not a short-term relationship. If the dog is going to stay indoors they will need to be house-broken. You cannot go off and leave them unattended for hours on end and expect them to hold it. Many people crate their dog when they are not home in order to avoid mishaps.

If you live in an apartment or you don't have a fenced yard your pet will need exercise the same as you do. This will promote better behavior when they are left alone. Often a dog will act out in boredom, trying to get the attention of their owners.

Your dog will require a lot of love and attention. They live to satisfy their masters and they are thrilled when their master gives them praise. They love you and generally want to please you so love and attention is very important to them. It is very refreshing to come home after a difficult day at work and have your dog happily greet you when you get there.

Often the best pets are found at the humane shelter. Most of them are not pure breeds and all they want out of life is a happy home. If you decide to go with a pure breed it is very important that you research their characteristics. Yorkies, for instance, are generally very hyper, even late in life, and labs are usually very people friendly. The hyper breeds sometimes do not get along well with children but get along well with adults.

Many of the pure breed dogs do not shed so if you are going to keep them indoors this might be something you want to look at. Also, many of them require combing and grooming, which can become expensive. All dogs will require flea and tick treatment and heart worm treatment on a monthly basis, even if they are inside.

If you do your homework before choosing your pet, you and your family can look forward to years of happiness and love. Choosing the right dog to fit your family needs can lead to a wonderful addition to your family.
