How to use Yahoo Messenger for the Web

Yahoo messenger for the web is a simple tool and is used in exactly the same way as yahoo for download. Yahoo for the web is designed so all you need to do is open a web page, no need to update and re-update this application which can be time consuming. This is a step by step guide on how to use it. It is a simple guide, more help is readily available as I have noted below.

You need to go to: http://webmessenger.yahoo.com/ Once there enter your yahoo nickname and password. Once there you see if a screen with a big smiley face on it, and on the left your contact list. The first thing you will want to do is add a contact. Go to the bottom left hand corner and click add; and add Yahoo contact. Once your concact has added you, his or her name will be in your left hand column.

Underneath your name at the top left you can change your status i.e. you put yourself at busy status so you do not get disturbed. You can also choose to be available and even invisible. (This invisble option is avilable at startup so you can logon without anyone knowing.)

To send a message all you need to do is click on your contact and it opens up a window where the big smiley face it. To send a message just type in the box below the little smiley and return to send a message. In this littel box you can also change your font and colour of your text.

Your contacts will always show if they are online or not. If they show they are offline they are either not on the internet or they are invisible, your contact will be greyed out. If your contact is online they will show as being in yellow and either will show available or perhpas busy.

Contacts can also be grouped - just move your mouse to the right hand side of his name and you will see a down arrow, click that. Now move to group (the option to create a new group is there too). Create your group e.g. friends and then move as needed. Here you can delete the contact too if no longer needed and you can enter a phone number.

You can show your message history by clicking message history top right. You can also turn off sound and of course if you get stuck the help button is never too far away.

Yahoo messenger for the web has made chatting a lot simplier, as now we do not need to download yet another application. It is quick to logon too and it alerts you when you get a message so no need to check your page for messages. I hope other messengers will go this way too, so much hard disk space is taken up by new applications it would be nice to be able to have more applications accesable via the web!
