I was sitting in the vision center getting my new pair of glasses. Frames in small, medium and large; in dark, light and designer styles surrounded me. As the sales clerk checked the fit, I started, noticing a being in the mirror. Tall and imposing, he radiated light that seemed to come from within.
I closed my eyes, counting to ten, and decided to ignore him for the moment. I could hear the hustle and bustle of shoppers. Everything seemed normal. I opened my eyes again and he was still there, waiting and watching.
"Who are you?" I asked. "Where did you come from? And why are you here?"
He smiled. "I am Revealer-of-Truth. You have asked for discernment, so I am here to take you on a journey." He took my hand and we were in a large stadium full of cheering, excited people. I blinked, feeling disoriented.
"Tell me what you see", said Truth. I scanned the crowd. I saw flashes of light and patches of dark. "Look closer", he said. I noticed a core of light on the man who was in front of me. It was filled with light and dark, and in the very center was a tiny speck of light so bright it almost hurt my eyes to look at it. Turning my head, I noticed every person I saw had this light. In some, the speck was barely flickering. In others, the speck was blinding in its intensity and strength. "But what is it?" I asked. "What does it mean?"
Truth explained. "Each person is born with a spark of Divinity implanted within them, a connection to the Creator. As they grow older, they will feel incomplete. Some will embrace the things of this world, the excitement, pleasures, and lusts to fill the emptiness. Others will look deeper for the fulfillment they seek. They will search out books filled with the words of God. Some will go to synagogues or churches to be taught by the Teachers of Holy Things. Many will learn to fellowship and talk with the Creator through prayer. The ones who embrace the things of the world will diminish their spark. The ones seeking God will strengthen their spark. Now, look once again and tell me what you see."
I looked back at the crowd. I noticed each person had light and dark standing behind them. Squinting, I saw the dark become ugly, miniature beings. Some resembled the statues I had seen of gargoyles. Some were misshapen and deformed and others had wings and scales. As I looked, some turned to stare at me, sensing my scrutiny. I began to feel uneasy and sick to my stomach. I leaned against Truth and gasped, "What are they?"
Truth said, "These are the
