Fall has arrived and the fair is here. Your children are asking to go. The fair costs money and is great for big kids, but can be worth the cost for small kids too. If you decide you have time and money this year, see my list before buying those tickets.

1. Don't rush. You can't be in a hurry when you spend time with your kids. Especially when you're out to have fun. Plan to go to the fair when you don't have to rush, on a day you have no other plans. Take your time!

2. Don't purchase advance tickets. Advance tickets may be sold at a discount price, but you should wait until you get to the fair. Rain may not bother the big kids at all, but the little ones don't like it so much. It's also ensures that your kids are not sick. You can always reschedule if necessary!

3. Bring along family or friends. Going to the fair can feel like work for a parent, as toddlers can be quite a handful. Having more hands to help children with rides and watch gear makes everyone's experience more pleasant. Bring help!

4. Bring a stroller or wagon. Going to the fair means a lot of walking around and strollers can make the trip easier. When children get tired, you won't have to carry them. You can store all your stuff in them too!

5. Plan to go when the fair won't be busy. If it's possible this year, take the day off from work. It's better to go when the fair won't be busy. Long line-ups to enter, go on rides and play games can be too much for small kids to handle. They're impatient!

6. Pack well. The fair can be chilly and you may need to bring sweaters. The rushing wind from the rides makes it cool. Bringing comfortable shoes and extra clothes for the kids is also a great idea. Children are messy, especially with sweets, and the farm animals can carry bacteria. Bring wipes!

7. Take safety precautions. Watch your kids closely, especially around rides. Small children don't realize the dangers. With so many people walking around, it's easy for your child to get lost. Teach your child what to do if you ever get separated and dress you family in clothes that are bright. Wear neon!

8. Let your children play games. Children don't care if you win a big toy, they are happy to just play the game. Sometimes parents take over and play the games for them. You can help them, but don't overdo it. It's for fun!

9. Ride with them. You don't have to ride every time with your child, but make sure you at least ride for some. It's more fun for your child to have you as company and share the experience together. Take turns!

10. Make it special. Don't go to the fair with small children if you are looking to shop. Hire a sitter and go by yourself. When you are taking your children for their first trip to the fair, spend your time doing stuff they will like. Put them first!

The fair is a great place to have family fun. It's not the same when your kids go with friends. With only a few years to share these moments together, make the most with your kids when they're young. Go this year!
