Finding a group, business or organization that will spay or neuter your animal for free is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Your options may only consist of acquiring a pet that has already been spayed or neutered or find low-cost services. But when adopting a pet from a shelter that has already been spayed or neutered, there are still the adoption fees so the service isn't actually free. This isn't to say that there are not free services available but it will take some searching and time to find these services in your area. Many of the free programs are only offered to low-income families or just to those who own cats.
If an individual cannot afford the costs of spaying or neutering than it would probably not be in the best interest of that person (or the pet) to take on the responsibility of a long-time companion. The cost of spaying and neutering is only the tip of the iceberg because the animal will need more throughout its life which is going to cost money.
Before you take on a new addition to the family, ask yourself if you can take on this responsibility both physically and financially. If money isn't a problem then you have made a choice to love and care for your four-legged companion. Everyone likes to save some money so there are options available for low-cost spaying and neutering services.
*Visit websites dedicated in providing information on free or low-cost services.
Broken down by state, this site gives information on free and low-cost options in your area. Most of the free services are only available for feral cats or low-income families.

"Friends of Animals" website will send you information on veterinarians who offer low-cost spaying and neutering. You will pay for a certificate that is then taken to a participating vet that is part of the program.

Spay/USA will also give information on veterinarians who participate in low-cost spaying and neutering programs.

*Contact your local animal control and shelters, ASPCA and veterinarians. These individuals and groups will be able to offer information on low-cost animal spaying and neutering services.
*Shop around. If you don't have a veterinarian already, call your local vet offices and get price quotes on the services you need.
If you just want a pet and money is tight, consider taking in a male. Male dogs and cats are generally less expense to have neutered. A pet that you already have that needs spayed or neutered should be kept confined preferably in your home until enough money can be set aside for spaying or neutering. If you are unable to afford the cost at this time, more than likely you won't be able to afford the extra mouths to feed should that pet reproduce.
Taking in a pet is a responsibility, no different than raising a child. They need food, shelter, health care, time and our love. Being a responsible pet owner is going to cost money, please keep that in mind when bringing home a new pet. As soon as your new companion is in your home, start searching out the best option to have your pet spayed or neutered.
