Joshua trees are found only in the Mohave desert. The Joshua Tree is the biggest of the yuccas growing between 15 and 40 feet tall. They contain spike shaped leaves. They are usually found between the elevations of 2,000 and 6,000 feet. They produce flowers in the Spring, but not all produce every year. The flowers are bell shaped, bloom in clusters, and do not smell good. Interestingly the Joshua Tree has been classified as belonging to the Lily Family. The Joshua Tree does bear fruit, which is greenish brown and falls off when it is ripe in late spring. The fruit contains flat seeds.
The Joshua Tree and the female Pronuba Moth rely on each other. The female Pronuba Moth is responsible or pollinating the tree's seeds elsewhere. The Joshua Tree provides the moth's larvae with yucca seeds that enables the moth's reproduction to be successful.
The name Joshua tree comes from Morman pioneers. The tree reminded them of the Old Testament prophet Joshua showing them the way to the Promised Land.
The two main places is the Mohave desert to see large forests of Joshua Trees are Joshua Tree National Park in California and Joshua Forest Parkway in Northwestern Arizona.
