There are sounds that can change your world.
The phone rings as it has so many times before.
It doesn't always come in the middle of the night
with the gruff, sandpaper voice of the police officer
telling you of an accident.
No it can ring while the sun lolls against a crisp blue sky.
It can ring - warbling innocently, cheerily
You pick it up, your voice still carrying a tinge of laughter
from the moment before
when all was well with your world.
And the voice
that soft tired voice on the other end - your sister -
"The cancer is back."
I have come to hate the phone.
