Growing older and still playing video games

But I'll never forget the plundering and swashbuckling I enjoyed on Genesis.

SONY PLAYSTATION
As the first console I purchased with my own hard-earned money, the PS1 is probably the most influential game system in my life in the sense that it is the system that received more of my time and money than any other system I have used. Taking the plunge and purchasing my Playstation in college, I immediately became immersed in games that appealed to my taste of genres: the RPG, or role-playing game. Sony released many great games in this genre intensifying a passion stemming back to Intellivision's Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. Though the Final Fantasy franchise seemed to be the popular choice, my all time favorite Playstation game was Star Ocean: The Second Story. The combination of character, story and action struck the perfect balance with me leading to many hours logged.

PC
The PC has always held a solid spot in the gaming world as the natural evolution of computers for business and home use allowed it to regularly keep up with the demands of video games. In my own timeline PC games coincided with my Playstation days. The RPG choices seemed endless and even more challenging with the likes of Baldur's Gate. The worlds to explore grew allowing unprecedented freedom in the world of the game. Linear storylines became altered by the choices you make within the games allowing a tailored gaming experience. The PC continues to perform steadily as the hardware technology develops consistently to accommodate games requiring more memory space and more processing speed.

XBOX 360
After college, I definitely experienced a gap in my video game experience. In joining the "real world" and defining myself as an adult, I missed the evolution brought about by Playstation 2 and the original XBOX. I was aware of them but only peripherally as I never really had access to play. Soon video game consoles seemed to be constantly changing with the gaming community constantly waiting for the next generation of games. This brings us to the release of the XBOX 360. Without the generosity of a good friend, this latest revolution would have passed me by as well. However, as it stands, I now own one and enjoy the comradery that I experienced with the advent of the Intellivision. Though games are still the bread and butter of today's consoles, systems, such as the XBOX 360, offer a multimedia experience that can entertain the whole family.

Though priorities in life have changed with family and career moving to the forefront, video games still provide a great source of entertainment and stress relief for me. I belong to a technological generation and have seen with my own eyes the wonder of innovation that appears to be endless. As home entertainment becomes more and more integrated into society, these technological advances will be a lever launching us into the future.
