Cleaning green: What steps to take to ensure that your maid or janitor is using earth-friendly products and techniques in your home or business

Green cleaning practices are important for good health, as well as for the planet. You can start by explaining to your maid or janitor, if they don't already know, why earth-friendly products and green cleaning techniques are better than traditional ones.

Training is an important part of being earth-friendly, and the person in charge of your cleaning should be aware of what is required in efficient use of water and electricity. They need to understand about toxic chemicals, which can harm the environment, and must know how to handle dangerous waste, or any harmful substances that need to be disposed of safely and legally.

You can supply a list of items, or substances, that need to be isolated for safe disposal, and a list of items for recycling, which should include bottles, drinks cans, printer cartridges, paper and cardboard.

Ensure all bin liners and waste bags used for general trash, are made from biodegradable material. Cleaning products should have packaging that can be refilled or recycled.

You may also want to check all janitorial and cleaning equipment used on your premises. Suppliers should have a good environmental policy. Your vacuum cleaner should have an advanced air-filtration system, to avoid airborne particles escaping, and any hard-floor cleaning equipment should have an efficient dust control system.

Make it clear that all cleaning products bought for use on your premises must be made from earth-friendly, natural ingredients, like corn starch, coconut oil, orange peel, and other plant materials from sustainable sources.

Stronger cleaning fluids will have to be made from safe non-chemical substances, or from biodegradable chemicals. These should be non-toxic and hypoallergenic. You will not allow the use of anything made from petrochemicals.

If you check that cleaning products are certified by the EcoLogo Program, or are Green Seal certified, you can be sure they are not overpriced and will effectively provide a good clean healthy environment.

When hiring someone to do a cleaning job, you need to make it very clear that you want your premises cleaned safely, using only earth-friendly products.
