How to care for long hair

down the hair length. Use a generous amount of conditioner from this point all the way to the ends. I personally like to use a little extra on the ends just for good measure.

Comb and Rinse:

Comb the conditioner through the hair with a wide toothed comb in order to make sure the conditioner is thoroughly distributed through your hair. This will also help to remove any tangles that may have been caused from washing.

While combing the conditioner through your hair you will be able to condition the upper portion of your hair by simply combing this also. I comb the top portion last so that it only gets a tiny bit of conditioner. Then simply rinse as usual. If you wish and can bear it, you can do a final cold-water rinse. This is said to close the hair shaft and result in shinier hair. Personally, I see no difference when doing this; therefore, I have decided freezing my head is just not worth it.

Frequency:

Long hair should not be washed everyday. I realize that might shock some people, however, long hair needs the natural oils and will do best if washed every 2 to 3 days. I generally wash my hair every other day. This works best for my hair type. You will need to do what works best for you while making sure you are not washing too often which strips your hair of natural oils it needs in order to maintain healthy shine.

Take Your Vitamins:

Vitamins will help insure you get the nutrients your hair needs to be healthy. The best vitamin I have ever found for healthy hair is Flinstone chewable vitamins. These vitamins have all the essentials nutrients needed for healthy hair growth and since they are chewable, you actually get the benefit of all the nutrients.

Styling Tools:

Using styling tools should be limited. Pay attention to your hair to see how it reacts to heating appliances. Your hair will tell you what tools work and how often it can handle them being used. I realize that is a silly statement. However, I believe if you watch your hair closely, you will be able to tell what and how often you can use styling tools.

From my personal experience, I have found that my hair does not work well with blow-drying. Therefore, I always allow my hair to air dry. My hair also does not respond well with hot rollers or straightening irons. Therefore, I use a small barrel curling iron to add curls or waves and a large barrel curling iron to straighten while curving the ends up or under. Everyone's hair is different, which is why it is important to pay attention to your hair when deciding what to use and what to toss.

This also applies to how often these appliances are used. I generally only use styling appliances a couple of times a week. Long hair is so versatile that you really don't need to style it everyday in order to look great.

Reduce Tangles in Bed:

In order to reduce tangles while asleep, I have found it to be very beneficial to sleep on a satin pillowcase. Long silky hair and satin pillowcases go hand in hand together for a beautiful nights sleep. You may also find it helpful to wear long hair in a high loose ponytail when sleeping. This will add volume the next morning while keeping hair up out of the way of tugs and pulls from rolling bodies.
