I am a novice gardener so I thought I would buy a hydroponic garden and start there. My husband and I love salads so we started with lettuce. It's true as advertised, that there was no trouble with bugs and it's true there wasn't too much care. I only had to put in water once in a while and put in a few tablets here and there. The hydroponic garden was indeed simple. But it cost us $150. for the hydroponic garden set and another $20. for the seed package for lettuce. Now we had $175. invested however not too much time invested. But with the hydroponic garden it took about 3 weeks to grow some lettuce, and then when we had a full crop, we only had enough to make one salad for two. The crop would have given us more lettuce after a little time, maybe every few days, but who wants to wait forever for your salad. If you like hobbies, the hydroponic garden is o.k. But if you are looking to have salads every night for dinner, and to save money at the grocery store it's a loser. I could have bought a lot of lettuce for $175.
