Leaving Eden
The first thrusting stroke
Drew cheers and groans
As clambouring children
Drew breath
And sun-dried Larch
Cut scything through black water
On our way
The last boat from Eden
Steered steadily away
And all her crew
Refused to turn
As each gaze forged a memory
With tinkling tones accompanied
In silence
We watched the distant pillows
Of wispy factory smoke
Mingled with the cotton candied clouds
Rein us closer
With every tiring stroke
We died a day
The last boat from Eden
Bit deep in shale and sand
And tired limbs
And creaking ribs
Spilled out on to the land
We bade adieu
To innocence
We left behind
Our tanks and guns
And hurried home
In single file
To days
And years
Of memories
