The harms of drugs versus the harms of the 'War on Drugs'

by Karl Hull

Created on: September 01, 2008

For decades this nation has spent billions of dollars and thousands of lives fighting the war on drugs.Yet, there seems to be no end to it. The government allows the sale of tobacco and alcohol, even though the first causes addiction, cancer and shortness of life. The second causes misery for those addicted and death by the thousands due to accidents. Seems our nation would rather make a killing on the taxes for these legal drugs then to stop the killing of the people who are addicted and abuse them. The majority of the users for tobacco and alcohol is said to be those less likely to afford the cost. Lets use some of that tax revenue to educate and treat the addictions. OF course when they were illegal at one time in our history many more suffered and died because of gangsters and corruption.

Lets say for example that we have a forest fire that we can not stop, but we can control it. Lets say that the controlling of it will benefit society by supplying heat. WE would have gone from an uncontrollable situation to one that is under control and benefits everyone.

If we legalize, monitor and control drug use in this nation it will eliminate drug trafficking. The government can set a price that would make it non profitable to the criminals. We could tax the use of these drugs and with the money educate and treat users. Think of the lives saved by not having a lifelong drug war. Think of all the people that would benefit from the revenue from the governmental sale and control of drugs. The drugs would be safer and eventually the majority of users would cease to abuse as they do now. But of course, this will never happen because if it did then those in charge would find it hard to get pay offs and kick backs from drug cartels.

As a citizens of this country we have to face the fact that corruption within all levels of our government is destroying our way of life. The majority of leaders started their way into government with the overall intention of helping the citizens of this nation by protecting our rights. Needless to say after a while corruption sets in and greed takes over and we have the average political leadership that we see today. It is extremely rare to find anyone in government that is not extremely wealthy. That problem helped bring Russia to its knees. Now we are on the same track.Yes, there are a few exceptions. We have some people in office that are keeping us from total corruption, but they can not do it alone. We the people must vote to get the crooks
